Portchester Castle
Portchester Castle is a medieval castle built within the finest Roman fort in the United Kingdom. Originally built by the Romans as a fortified naval base it sits at the northern end of Portsmouth Harbour where it holds a commanding view.
It’s been the launch site for numerous kings at the start of their campaigns against the French. Edward III and the Battle of Crecy, Henry V and the 100 years war, Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth 1st, all famous visitors.
A prison during the Napoleonic wars for over 7000 French soldiers and sailors!
Today you can climb the tower and gaze at the same views as centuries of soldiers walking the walls before you. We normally combine this tour with a visit to Fort Nelson on Portsdown hill, but as this is bespoke, you choose.
